Commissioned in 1981 by the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, the Earth Mass is a contemporary ecological Mass setting in celebration of the Earth that features two choirs with soloists, an ensemble of instruments comprising soprano sax, oboe, English horn, cello, drums/world percussion, guitar, bass, piano and organ, and the voices of humpback whales, orcas, timber wolves, baby seal pups, and other creatures great and small!
Missa Gaia / Earth Mass will be presented this year on the feast of Saint Francis in its liturgical context of the service of Holy Communion.
See below the remarks of co-composer Paul Halley on the Earth Mass.
