This episode covers reading rhythms with text. You will need the following "These are halves and quarters" practice sheet to follow along with the video tutorial:


After you have watched the tutorial and practiced "These are halves and quarters", test your understanding with the quiz! If you get all correct answers, you are ready to move on to Episode 3. If you do not understand all the questions and answers, you should go back and re-watch Episode 2 (click on it in the left margin).

Ties combine the value of the two notes tied together.
Two quarter notes tied together equal what?
What does a quarter rest look like?
Which notes have the centre filled in?
Which notes have flags on them?
How many numbers does a time signature have in it?
What does the top number in a time signature mean?
What does the bottom number in a time signature mean?
How many half notes does a 4/4 bar have in it?
How many eighth notes does a 3/4 bar have in it?

Practice as much as you can with the "These are halves and quarters" practice sheet. First decide what your quarter-beat pulse will be. Clap your quarter-beat pulse while you speak the text in the rhythm notated.
